Custom Structured Note – 1.7 Multiplier

The Original IRA — Ira Koyner — is pleased to announce an exclusive, custom structured note available only through Triathlon Partners LLC. It’s designed to participate in equity-market growth with a favorable boost.

Watch Ira Koyner explain the full strategy in this video:

What it is — in plain English

A 5-year note linked to the futures excess return of three major U.S. equity indexes: S&P 500 (SPXFP), Nasdaq 100 (NDXNQER), and Russell 2000 (RTYFPE). At maturity, we calculate a rainbow-weighted average of their returns — then apply a 1.7× multiplier when that average is positive.

  • Term: 5 years
  • Underlying measure: Futures excess return for each index
  • Ranking & weights at maturity: Best = 50%, Middle = 30%, Worst = 20%
  • Multiplier: If the weighted average is positive, it’s multiplied by 1.7×. If the weighted average is negative, no multiplier applies.
Why the generous 1.7×? Two reasons: (1) the note uses a weighted average of three indexes rather than a single index, giving the issuer more flexibility to enhance terms; and (2) it’s tied to futures excess returns, which are typically more cost-efficient to hedge than direct index replication. These design choices allow for a higher multiplier.

Visual explainer: Rainbow weighting → then 1.7× multiplier

Best performer (50%) Middle performer (30%) Worst performer (20%)
Rank & weight at maturity Best × 50% + Middle × 30% + Worst × 20% Weighted average Weighted Average × 1.7 Final return Final Return If the weighted average is negative, no multiplier applies — the final return equals that weighted average.

Quick example

Suppose after 5 years the futures excess returns are: S&P 500 = +30%, Nasdaq 100 = +50%, Russell 2000 = +10%.

IndexRankWeightReturnWeighted
Nasdaq 100Best50%+50.0%+25.0%
S&P 500Middle30%+30.0%+9.0%
Russell 2000Worst20%+10.0%+2.0%
Weighted average+36.0%
Apply multiplier (× 1.7)+61.2%

Negative scenario: If the weighted average were −5%, no multiplier would apply; the final return would be −5%.
